![]() Typical Crown Royal and Canadian Whisky hallmarks in general only better, sweet entry,toffee and caramel with nuts, vanilla, then the American oak char hits with a thump with char, tobacco, leather and more char, followed by light,more floral oak notes and hints of dried fruit or cognac and Limousin Oak lightening the oak to a nice lingering finish. Clear yellow gold amber color, pale gold in the glass.On swirling it leaves a very thin coat on the glass, forming a crenelated edge quickly then thin legs. The nose on Crown Royal XO is well integrated and inviting without being overly strong or assertive. Along with these traditional aromas are some new ones including dried fruit, iris flower, and ginger, all fairly common cognac/french oak related aromas. Crafted by the Crown Royal Master Blender, XO furthers the Crown Royal signature blend from 50 of their finest whiskies, and then finishes them in cognac. The nose on the XO has many of the traditional Crown Royal aromas including caramel, vanilla (which is a little more shortbread cookie here), and oak, but the oak notes are much deeper and stronger. Dark amber in color, Crown Royal XO has clearly picked up some additional color from its time in cognac barrels. While there’s no word on where the cognac barrels used to finish this release come from (or how long the whisky spends in those barrels), our best guess is that they come from Hennessy, which Diageo has a distribution relationship with. ![]() Made from a blend of roughly 50 different whiskies, this blend is finished in Limousin Oak Cognac casks. The XO is their newest addition to a venerable lineup. Definitey worth a try, just not sure if it’s worth the asking price.Crown Royal is a Canadian Whisky that was started in 1939. While we both enjoyed it, I doubt that we’d buy a full bottle, especially given it’s $50 suggested retail price. We’re both curious to try this chilled alongside a Rye Manhattan to see if our impressions were accurate. The Crown Royal XO was definitely a unique and unusual drinking experience. ![]() Everything in the nose carries through to the palate with some candied orange peel, maple, mint, and rye spice. It’s reminds me of drinking a very dry Rye Manhattan. Often, but not always, Canadian whiskies are blends of corn, barley and rye which are. G-LO: It even tastes like what I imagine a barrel aged cocktail would taste like. Distilled in Canada and aged in barrels for at least three years.It’s almost as if I can taste the Vermouth, bitters, and Rye whiskey when I drink this. Limpd: Very light mouthfeel with a definite Manhattan Cocktail quality.Getting lots of candied orange peel, bitters, and botanicals, along with some maple sugar (it is Canadian Whisky after all!), and a hint of peppermint. G-LO: This smells like what I imagine a barrel aged whisky cocktail would smell like.candies sugar orange slices followed immediately by the expected maple syrup notes. This is no ordinary reserve quality whisky. ![]() Enjoy the elegantly delicious balanced flavor with hints of vanilla, spice and rich dried fruit. Once I work past that, there’s a good bit of sweetness, i.e. Canada- An exceptional blend of 50 of Crown Royal's finest whiskies, finished in cognac casks for an extraordinarily complex and smooth whiskey.
